Athletes and Human Rights in China

This summer the Olympics will be held in Beijing, a decision fraught with controversy since it was announced back in 2001. China’s human-rights record is abysmal—from forced abortions, to persecuting Christians and other people of faith, to clamping down on free speech, to supporting a government that has committed genocide in Darfur.
The Olympic committee, back in 2001, said choosing Beijing would be a catalyst for change in China. It “may help to liberalize a country,” said the committee’s vice president, Thomas Bach of Germany.
But that will not happen when, as the London Daily Mail puts it, you “kow tow” to the host country, and you tell athletes to keep quiet—which is exactly what is happening.
To comply with the international Olympic Charter, Britain’s Olympic athletes are being forced to sign contracts promising they will not say anything about China’s human-rights abuses. If they violate the contract, athletes will find themselves on a plane headed home. The contract could mean that an athlete “who witnesses someone being mistreated on the way to a stadium” could not talk to colleagues about it. And they would have to “exercise self-censorship” on blogs and e-mails.
And while U.S. athletes may speak freely—they cannot do so at any official Olympic venue or press conference. Come on.
(The above is part of  a column written by  Chuck Colson. Do read the whole column
Shut Up and Compete::  This is wrong. I am not sure what we should do to change China but it is an outrage that people are told they can't speak out against an evil government. It is my hope no matter the cost some athletes will stand up for what is right. )

Hannah Montana and Your Children

I admit if I had a preteen daughter I wouldn’t pay the big bucks so she could go see HANNAH MONTANA. I also don’t understand parents who are willing to pay thousands of dollars so their children can go. At the same time I have to agree with a commentary I heard and read on the net which said the following about  HANNAH MONTANA.. She has a clean
Image , clean  songs  and  nothing  in  her personal   life  that  has  led  to pregnancy, drugs, or   REHAB. LET’S HOPE SHE CAN STAY THAT WAY IN AN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY THAT LONG AGO GAVE UP PROMOTING WHOLESOMENESS.

Prince Harry doesn't like British Press

Prince Harry may be returning from the Afghan frontline to a hero's welcome, but he seems far from happy with England, notably life on the media frontline, according to remarks released Friday. Officials have praised the British media for strictly adhering to the embargo on reporting Harry's deployment, which came after he was unable to go to Iraq last year due to concerns for his security.
But Harry, third in line to the British crown, didn't seem overly happy with his homeland's press, who have given generous coverage in recent years to his partying escapades in the nightclubs of London and elsewhere.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to send the members of the House home on vacation

On Feb. 14, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to send the members of the House home on vacation instead of having them vote on extending the Protect America Act, a measure that already had passed in the U.S. Senate 68-29. The bill, among other things, provides civil immunity for private companies that assist U.S. intelligence agencies in intercepting terrorist communications to, from or through the United States. With the House adjourned, the PAA expired -- and Americans became instantly more vulnerable.
(The above is from a column written by Oliver North. I  know there are many people in America who are Democrats who love our nation. However what the House Speaker has done makes me wonder if  the top leaders in her party are among those who love this great nation. Read North's whole column here)

Prince Pulled out of War

Britain's defense chief decided Friday to immediately pull Prince Harry out of Afghanistan after news of his deployment was leaked on the U.S. Web site the Drudge Report.
Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup, chief of the Defense Staff, said he decided to withdraw the prince after senior commanders assessed the risks, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The decision was based on concerns that worldwide media coverage of Harry in Afghanistan could put him and his comrades at increased risk.
(Read more on this story at the link below. It looks like to me this was the right and proper thing to do. The evil people that the Prince is fighting would love to make the news for killing a prince.)

I want the bad schools to close

Where is there no competition here in America? The answer in our government schools. Cal Thomas talks about this in his radio commentary today.
We hear so much about how we need to spend more money for public education. However private schools who get no help from the government are doing a better job. The facts prove it. There are many good teachers and workers in our government schools we should thank God for them. We need to allow school choice here in America. All parents not just the rich ones need to be able to send their children to the best schools public or private. It is time we do what is best for the kids not the government schools. I am sorry but I want the bad schools to close and  the bad teachers to lose their jobs.
If you get a chance listen to the commentary Cal Thomas did, Thursday February 28, 2008.

NFL Reverses Call On Church Parties

The NFL, which found itself on the receiving end of protests and controversy after it objected to churches showing the Super Bowl on big-screen televisions, has reversed course and will now permit the viewings. In a letter to Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would not object to "live showings -- regardless of screen size -- of the Super Bowl" by religious organizations. In response to questions from Hatch, Goodell said in the letter, dated Feb. 19, the NFL will implement the policy starting with next year's Super Bowl.
(This is good news. Many churches have struggled if they should call off  Sunday night church on Super Bowl Sunday  and also this will help churches who want to reach out to sports fans. I have always found it funny that the NFL has no trouble with bars showing the Super Bowl but darn it lets keep the churches from showing it. Now the NFL has done right. Thank you NFL, better late than never. Read more on this issue NFL Reverses Call On Church Parties.)

school suspends boy over Mohawk

A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school. Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students.
An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn't acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban.
(No matter what you think of this rule or any rule we need to submit to those who are trying to make our schools better. Read the rest of this story Ohio school suspends boy over Mohawk.)

Do me a favour. Let's get real about Cuba

"I must admit, I greeted the news that Fidel Castro was stepping down with great pleasure. It is amazing how so many of us on the liberal wing of politics have allowed ourselves to be manipulated by his mad regime. It is cruel and oppressive and has reduced his people to misery."
"Cuba is a textbook example of how political mismanagement can push entire nations to the breadline. Economic statistics are wrapped up in propaganda. Thus we are told the economy surged 12 per cent last year, and wage growth was 5 per cent."
"Too often the darker side of Cuba is hidden by the lack of free reporting. There was a famous mass trial in 2003 of dissidents and journalists which saw 75 condemned to imprisonment. Some were found guilty for the thought crime of "lending books".
(The above is part of a column   written by  Liberal writer Chris Walker. In this  this brief but effective article Walker gives some truths about Cuba which we all need to embrace.)

senator's investigation into spending and oversight at six "prosperity gospel" ministries

A senator's investigation into spending and oversight at six "prosperity gospel" ministries has hit a roadblock with a minister intensifying his efforts to fight the inquiry, but made progress on Monday when another turned over documents.Flamboyant Texas-based faith healer Benny Hinn had turned over material to the Senate Finance Committee in response to a letter of inquiry from Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, in early November, an aide to the senator said.Meanwhile, another target of Grassley's investigation, Kenneth Copeland, sent a letter to supporters this month accusing Grassley of targeting the six ministries because of theological disagreements. Grassley denies the charge.

Did the N.Y. Times do McCain a favor?

"Since John McCain clinched the Republican presidential nomination, his campaign has been searching for the right surrogate to convince skeptical conservatives that he really is one of them."
"There is more than a little irony in the possibility that one of the least conservative organizations in America - The New York Times - could turn out to be the matchmaker who seals that deal."
(The above was written by Peter A. Brown. Read the whole column Did the N.Y. Times do McCain a favor? Brown makes a great point. Now unless this story proves to be true this could be the thing that brings those on the right to McCain's side.)
