12-year-old to judge: "I won't disappoint you"

Kameron Jones had a few words for the judge after learning Tuesday that he would be placed in Boys Town’s intensive program for troubled youth.

The 12-year-old stood up straight and faced Douglas County Juvenile Court Judge Douglas Johnson. In a soft but firm voice, Kameron made a vow.

“I just want to thank you for this opportunity, and I want you know that I won’t disappoint you.“

Moments earlier, Johnson placed Kameron in Boys Town on the recommendation of Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine and the boy’s family.

Kameron has admitted to fatally shooting his friend, Anthony Ray, 15, on Nov. 8. Kameron and another 15-year-old, Tony Robinson, told police that they thought the gun was empty when it was placed against Anthony’s head.
(This kid not only should be punished for what he did but also helped. Base on what I know the judge did the right thing here. Read more on this story 12-year-old to judge: "I won't disappoint you.)

Despite doctors' prognosis, boy is able to take the field

(Tired of all the bad political news. Here is some good news.)

Eight-year-old Kellan Brown loves football, and this year, he took advantage of his first time on the gridiron. (  Community Connection  )

Kellan, who has cerebral palsy, plays for the Millard Red Storm in the Nebraska Metro Conference. The third-grader has made seven touchdowns in eight games.

"It has been his world to be a part of this team," said his mother, Juliet Brown. "He lives and breathes it."

(You see nothing is impossible for those who have faith.)

Drinking age gets ivory tower scrutiny

Jered Matzke, a 21-year-old geography major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, supports lowering the drinking age, perhaps to 18.

In other countries, particularly France, college students have grown up "having a glass of wine with dinner and it being nothing," he said.

So maybe Congress should revisit the issue of lowering the drinking age, Matzke said.

Matzke's position is in line with about 100 college presidents, some from America's most widely known universities including Duke and Ohio State, who have signed the Amethyst Initiative. It seeks to start a national debate on whether to lower the drinking age from 21.

"This is a law that is routinely evaded," said John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont, who started the organization. "It is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory."

No Nebraska schools have signed the statement so far, although McCardell said his group is only in the middle of gathering support.

(This would be a bad lesson to teach young people. If you  can't obey a law change it. One of the top killers college age young people is drinking and driving. Read more of the above story Drinking age gets ivory tower scrutiny.)

Fonda Blames Bush for kids having kids

I could not believe it but yesterday on CNN news Jane Fonda said that President Bush and his policy on abstinence are to blame for those high school kids making a pact to get pregnant. (Read the post I did a few days ago High School Teens Had Pact To Get Pregnant .)
News for Jane if those teens had  followed abstinence they would not be pregnant. Also since they wanted to have babies I am not sure they would have taken any kind of birthday control.

I am still sad every-time I hear Jane bushing for something sinful. This is a lady who became born again years back but then said in a book that Jesus was not the only way. Yes followers of Christ can have views from the left but they  must agree Jesus is the only way and they should not back things which go against the Bible and morals. Judge orders teens to post apology on YOUTUBE for prank...

A judge is using YouTube to punish two boys who used the video-sharing website for a prank that ended with battery and criminal mischief charges against them.

The prank, known as "fire in the hole," has become common in the past year. It happened July 25 to fast-food worker Jessica Ceponis at the drive-through of the Taco Bell in Merritt Island, about 50 miles east of Orlando.

Ceponis handed a carload of teenagers their soft drinks. When she returned to the drive-through window to give them their change, they yelled, "Fire in the hole!" hurled a 32-ounce cup of soda at Ceponis and sped off.

The teens posted a video of the incident on YouTube.com, alongside a number of other videos showing similar pranks. Today, the teens are scheduled to post another video on YouTube: an apology that shows them facedown and handcuffed on the hood of a car.

(This is a great idea though it might be a good idea to give them some more punishment.  I hope the parents of these kids are also cracking the whip with some kind of tough love. Read more on this issue Judge orders teens to post apology on YOUTUBE for prank.)

Boy, 12, faces drunken driving charge

An Arkansas preteen faces a drunken driving charge after he and a friend drank his parents' beer, "got liquored up" and crashed his stepfather's pickup truck, the Johnson County sheriff said.
Sheriff Jimmy Dorney said the 12-year-old boy and his 10-year-old friend drove off in the truck May 4 to find a girl they met at a rodeo. The boys made it about 10 miles before the 12-year-old lost control of the truck.
(This is sad. Thank God no one was killed. These kids need tough love though they are just following what adults are doing too much in our culture. Read more of this story Boy, 12, faces drunken driving charge after crash.)

Drug testing for athletes

A Catholic High School in my city ( Creighton Prep   ) announced a few days ago that this coming fall they are going to start to randomly test its athletes for performance-enhancing drugs.
The all-boys school, has  a tradition of athletic power , will be the first in Nebraska to adopt a drug-testing policy of its kind.
Before participating in a sport, Prep students and their parents must sign a form consenting to year-round random testing. Students who don't consent won't be eligible. Students who fail a test must sit out one year.
Creighton Prep hopes the policy acts as a deterrent to steroid use and serves as a teaching tool about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs, said Athletic Director Dan Schinzel.
"There are two reasons that schools hesitate to do this," Schinzel said. "No. 1, the cost, which we have found not to be an inhibiting factor. . . .
"The second reason is they think there's a cloud of suspicion that will come over their school. I don't think that's true at all. We don't think we have a problem. We're being proactive. We see this as an educational tool."
Other schools in Nebraska have tested athletes for illegal drugs, but Prep is the first to test for performance-enhancing drugs.
Good for Prep. I wonder what our friends at the ACLU think? I myself think all athletes should be tested and that all students should be tested for all kinds of drugs, again I am sure the ACLU would be upset. Read more on what this high school is going to do drug testing for athletes.

John Rosemond: Take a stand against celebrity kids' antics

The 2008 RALPH Awards, held at a highly secret location somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. On stage, at the brightly-lit podium, bathed in a glow befitting of their celebrity, stand two nameless extras from "Alvin and the Chipmunks."
After the applause dies down, one hands the other an envelope . . . (ripping sound) . . . she smiles, leans into the microphone and says, "For parental inattention beyond mind-boggling with a 15-year-old, Rosemond's Awfully Ludicrous Parenting Honor goes to . . . yes! . . . LETICIA and BILLY RAY CYRUS!"
As Leticia and Billy Ray leave their chairs and make their way to the stage amid a standing ovation, a disembodied voice intones "Leticia and Billy Ray recently allowed their daughter, Miley, known to millions of young fans as Hannah Montana, to be photographed wearing nothing but what looks like a sheet, her back exposed, looking seductively over her right shoulder. The photos, taken by famed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, can be seen in the May issue of Vanity Fair."
All kidding aside, is this the beginning of yet another female child star train wreck? When the photo in question was taken, Cyrus told Vanity Fair that she thought it was "artsy" and praised Leibovitz for taking a ". . . like, beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool." Now, however, she claims that she is embarrassed by the photographs and has apologized to her fans.
(The above is part of a column written by JOHN ROSEMOND. More of the column is below.)

Now, however, she claims that she is embarrassed by the photographs and has apologized to her fans.
This same embarrassed 15-year-old recently appeared at the 2008 CMT Music Awards in Nashville wearing a dress that plunged to her diaphragm, giving the world a peek at the progress of her development. Several months back, Cyrus and a girlfriend were photographed while frolicking on the floor of a hotel room.
Some people, including yours truly, think the photos are sexually suggestive, but Miley/Hannah maintains they aren't bad and that controversy over them is "Satan attacking."
( I often agree with JOHN ROSEMOND. However this time we kind of are apart. I agree it wasn't smart to have these pictures taken. Rosemond also calls in the above column for parents to turn this young star off. Something Mr. Rosemond need to accept is this is a young 15 year old and outside of this issue she has been a good role model. She goes to church and her parents do discipline her at least her mom does. Now Miley along with her dad need to go on TV or some place and say how wrong this was. Read all of the above column if you like John Rosemond: Take a stand against celebrity kids' antics.)

Junior High Students suspended for not standing for Pledge of Allegiance

Three  eighth-graders from  Minnesota have been  suspended by their principal for not standing Thursday morning for the Pledge of Allegiance, violating a district policy that the principal now says may soon be reworded to protect free speech rights.
"My son wasn't being defiant against America," said Kim Dahl, mother of one of the students, Brandt, who attends Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Junior High School in northwestern Minnesota.
Brandt told the Forum newspaper in Fargo that Thursday's one-day in-school suspension, "was kind of dumb because I didn't do anything wrong. It should be the people's choice."
(Kids don't always  have the same rights as adults. If these were my children I would have been teaching them all along what the flag stands for and then if they pulled this act they would be standing because they wouldn't  feel much like sitting. In our schools and homes we need to teach our youth what our flag stands for. Read more on this issue right here .)

Will ID be needed to buy video games?

Young people face an ID check if they want to see an R-rated movie, but too many are walking into stores and purchasing video games that feature graphic sex and violence, Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., said Wednesday.
The Omaha lawmaker unveiled legislation that would require retailers to verify the age of those buying video games with mature and adult content.
Terry cited games such as the wildly successful — and intensely violent — Grand Theft Auto series. The latest installment in the series was just released, pulling in $500 million in its first week on store shelves.
Players often advance in such games by committing violent crimes.
"Murder, mayhem, rape, pillage, plunder — it's all part of the game," Terry said. "And you get rewarded."
Terry and Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, are pushing the bill.
(I am proud to write that Rep. Terry is my Congressman. It is time we stopped  easy shopping of evil  video games which is hurting our nation, our culture  and our kids.  Read more of the above story Will ID be needed to buy video games? )

10-year-old gives birth illegal immigrant charged

A 37-year-old man is charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who gave birth last month in Idaho.
"St. Anthony Police said they were notified of the young girl's pregnancy by medical personnel after she went in for treatment at a doctor's office," KIFI-TV reports on its website.
One day later, the ABC affiliate says the young mother delivered a 6-pound girl at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Idaho.
KIDK-TV says Guadalupe Gutierrez-Juarez, a suspected illegal immigrant, is being held at the Fremont County Jail. He's due in court next week to face rape charges.
(Those of us who have been upset by allowing people into our nation who have not followed the laws can now say we told you so. If you want read more of the above story  go here.)

Parents swear kids cuss more

Although there's no absolute proof backing them up, parents swear kids are dropping more F-bombs than ever before - and they're worried sick about the collateral damage.
Some are even sending their 5-year-olds to psychologists to get them to sound less like drunken sailors and more like kindergartners.
The issue drew national attention recently when a South Pasadena High School student started a No Cussing Club and helped launch a "cuss-free week" in the city.
But with advice ranging from doing nothing to washing out their mouths out with soap, just what the !@$% is a parent to do?
"I graduated (from high school) in 1980, and we heard people cussing, but if we got caught, we got suspended," said Brent Hatch, the father of McKay Hatch, the 15-year-old student who is leading the no-cussing campaign in South Pasadena.
( At times children just repeat what they hear if it be at home, school, or on tv. I do miss the good old days when you got a bar of soap or a paddling at school and at home if you used four letter words. Read more of this story Parents swear kids cuss more.)

America Kids Are Better

Gas prices are up, housing prices are down and the war in Iraq keeps grinding on. But against this depressing backdrop came upbeat news Thursday about the youngest Americans.
By a wide range of measures, babies and young children were significantly better off in this decade than the previous one, according to a report by the Foundation for Child Development, a private non-profit organization in New York.
The analysis of about two dozen key national indicators revealed promising trends on many fronts, including:
Education.About 70% of children ages 4 to 6 attended full-day kindergarten in 2006, up from less than 50% in 1994.
(I for one am tired of hearing how bad this nation is. Yes there are bad and evil things in our nation however America is still the best nation in the world. Read more of the above story here.)

Seven-year-old takes grandma's SUV for bumpy ride

A 7-year-old boy took his grandmother's Dodge Durango for a ride Friday and left a path of damage in his wake.
The tike, who police would not identify, grabbed a set of car keys in his grandmother's home and began his nearly eight-minute joy ride on the 300 block of Sandtree Drive, said Palm Beach Gardens police officer Ellen Lovejoy.
"When she came in, she saw the keys were gone," Lovejoy said of the grandmother. "Her car was gone too."
Meanwhile, blocks away, the white SUV struck two mailboxes on Burma Road and continued north.
No one was hurt during the episode. The child was charged with stealing a vehicle and was returned to his family.
(If this was my child not only would he have to pay for all the damage he did but his butt would be sore. Read the full story Seven-year-old takes grandma's SUV for bumpy ride.)
