Monday night, Ken Hayden Sr.'s heart stopped as firefighters loaded him into an ambulance while fighting to keep him alive.
Friday afternoon, he walked into their fire station and hugged them one by one.
"You guys are all my angels," he told them. "I owe my life to all of you."
It was one of those moments that make a rescue worker eager to go back to work tomorrow.
It's not that unusual to get a thank-you card in the mail from a survivor. And firefighters at Station 65, are accustomed to survivors and their families popping by with such sweet expressions of gratitude as cake and cookies. More often, the rescuers never hear from the people they rescue, but hey, it's their job.
Too often for their liking, they can't do enough for the people they're sent to help.
